Robert De Niro is considered one of the finest actors of his generation, winning two Academy Awards. He won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1975, for his portrayal as a young Vito Corleone in the 1974 film, The Godfather Part II.
This is marks the first and only time in the history of the Academy Awards, that two actors have won an Oscar for playing the same character in different films. Marlon Brando won the 1973 Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as the older Vito Corleone in The Godfather.
In 1981, De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Actor, for his performance as real life boxer Jake La Motta in Raging Bull.
De Niro has a partnership with noted Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa, and they co-own the successful Nobu group of restaurants.
De Niro attended the opening of the Nobu Hotel on May 16, 2018 in Marbella, Spain. He was sporting a Patek Philippe Reference 3940 Perpetual Calendar in Platinum. The reference 3940 was made from 1985 to 2006 and Jake has previously written about his love for the watch here: How I became fascinated with Patek Philippe.
It seems Robert De Niro likes to wear Patek Philippes to the opening of his restaurants, as fast forward a few months later to another opening and he had another Patek on his wrist.
The photo below was taken at the ground-breaking ceremony for the world's first integrated Nobu Residences, Nobu Hotel and Nobu Restaurant in Toronto, Canada on June 11, 2018. De Niro was wearing a Reference 6006G. This 18k white gold cased timepiece has a polarizing dial design, featuring a subsidiary seconds at the 4 o’clock position and the numerals for the date placed on the outer track of the dial.
It turns out Chef Nobu also likes the brand. I happened to come across a video on the Nobu website of De Niro and Chef Nobu reminiscing on how the restaurant got started and spotted the familiar sight of a Calatrava cross deployant buckle on the wrist of Chef Nobu.
A bit later in the video we are provided with the money shot of Chef Nobu’s watch. He is wearing a Reference 5496 Perpetual Calendar in Platinum!
